Get rid of your old stuff on Freecycle / Ebay
Brilliant website - if you have something that isn't worth selling, but is still usable - offer it on Freecycle instead of taking it to the tip. If someone else wants it, they can come and get it. The best part is that you don't have to shift it, if they can pick it up. Freecycle's goal is to keep useable items out of landfill.

Or Ebay: If it doesn't go on Freecycle, put it on Ebay with a 'Buy it Now' of £1 or similar - something like a wardrobe will get to a much wider audience
Video-1: This one is American but gives the best overview - it all applies in the UK as well:
Video-2: (..Londoners throw away enough garbage every hour to fill an olympic size swimming pool and 10% of that is electrical)
